Vibration White Finger Claims
An estimated 1 in 10 people who use vibrating power tools go on to suffer from vibration white finger, a type of Raynaud’s Disease which is also known as hard arm vibration. Vibration White Finger (VWF) is a generally irreversible condition caused by an overexposure to vibration. Those who work with tools such as pneumatic drills, power drills, chainsaws, grinders and impact wretches are all at risk of suffering from VWF.
What are the symptoms of the condition
VWF initially appears as a seemingly minor injury that worsens as time passes. Symptoms of the injury include cold fingers, numbness, pins and needles, a loss of colour in fingers, poorer manual dexterity and weaker grip strength. The symptoms are accentuated in cold weather and as the injury worsens they can appear in less extreme temperatures and even when wet. Rather than the vibration, it is the temperature that induces the symptoms, therefore it is undetectable at the very early stages of the injury and occurs months or years after the use of vibrating tools has ceased.
VWF prevention
Employers must assess and monitor the usage of vibrating tools in accordance with The Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005. Vibration is assessed in terms of acceleration amplitude of the tool and the duration that the employee uses the tool. If these assessments prove that an employee is at risk of VWF then a company must reduce or eliminate exposure to vibration by offering alternative tools. Employers must also ensure that all tools are properly maintained, warm clothes such as gloves are worn by employees in cold temperatures, adequate protection is provided, regular rest breaks are taken by employees, and sufficent instruction and training is provided to all those using power tools.
Vibration White Finger Compensation
VWF can have serious effects on both home lives and careers. Not only can the injury affect recreational activity but it can result in an employee no longer having the ability to do their job to an adequate standard. If you have been diagnosed with VWF then it is highly likely that your employers have not conformed to the aforementioned regulations and you are entitled to compensation.
